Why the count differs by state

Each state's top band is sized against its whole Year 12 age population, so bigger states have more 99.95s. Queensland's 37 from 30,167 eligible students is a higher share than NSW because fewer Queensland students take the ATAR pathway, while the age group used for the bands is the whole population.

What a 99.95 takes

  • NSW: an aggregate of at least 479.4 out of 500 in 2025, which means scaled marks averaging about 48 out of 50 per unit across 10 units.
  • Victoria: a scaled aggregate of at least 211.42 in 2025.
  • SA and NT: a university aggregate of 89.30 out of 90 or more in 2025.
  • WA: a TEA of about 406 or more out of 430 in 2025.

In practice that means top results in every subject that counts, usually including courses that scale well. Check where your own results sit with the calculators for HSC, VCE, SACE and WACE.

Is 99.95 the same as 100?

It is the highest possible ATAR. There is no 100. See is the ATAR out of 100.

How rare is 99.95 among ATAR students?

State99.95sStudents with an ATARShareAbout 1 in

Queensland3730,1670.123%815
Western Australia1810,2650.175%570

The share is higher in WA and Queensland because a smaller part of each age group takes the ATAR, while the top band is sized against the whole age group. A 99.95 is equally hard in every state; there are simply fewer ATAR students sharing it.

How close to perfect is 99.95?

  • SA and NT: 89.30 out of 90, an average of about 19.84 out of 20 in every counted subject.
  • NSW: 479.4 out of 500, about 48 out of 50 per unit across 10 units.
  • WA: a TEA of about 406, which needs very high scaled scores plus bonus courses, since four perfect scores alone make 400.

99.95 myths

  • "You need perfect scores." Close to perfect, not perfect. In SA, 89.30 of 90 was enough in 2025.
  • "Only certain subjects can get you there." Top results in any subject scale to near the maximum, but most 99.95 students also take some courses that scale well.
  • "It guarantees any course." Courses such as medicine also use tests and interviews.
