VCE Study Score Calculator: Estimate Your Study Score and Scaled Score

Turn your expected place in the state into an estimated study score, or check what a study score means, then see what it scaled to in your study in 2025.

How it works: a VCE study score is a rank in the state, built so the middle of each study is about 30 and most students fall between 23 and 37. This calculator uses that design to turn your expected place in the state into an estimated study score, or to show where a study score places you. It then shows the scaled score for your study from VTAC's 2025 report.

VCE study score key facts

  • Study scores run from 0 to 50 and are designed so the middle of each study is about 30.
  • About the top 24% of a study reach 35, the top 8% reach 40 and the top 2% reach 45.
  • In 2025 a study score of 35 scaled to 48 in Specialist Mathematics, 41 in Methods and 33 in English.
  • Your study score comes from the VCAA; VTAC scales it for the ATAR.

Why it asks for your place, not your SAC marks

Your study score is not an average of your SAC and exam percentages. The VCAA moderates your school's SAC scores against its exam results, combines your graded assessments and ranks everyone in the state. Your SAC rank in your school and your exam result both matter, but there is no public formula that turns raw percentages into a study score. So the honest way to estimate is to think about where you are likely to finish across the state, for example the top 20%, and convert that.

A useful guide: if you rank well within a strong cohort at school and do well on the exam, you are likely in the top quarter of the state, which is a study score around 35. How study scores are built is explained in what is a study score.

From study score to ATAR

The scaled score is what goes into your aggregate. In 2025 a study score of 35 scaled to 41 in Mathematical Methods and 33 in English. Once you have a study score for each study, put them into the VCE ATAR calculator. Every study's scaling is on VCE scaling 2025.

Scaled values between VTAC's published points (20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50) are read in a straight line, which is why some show a decimal.

How to judge your place in the state

  • Your SAC rank matters more than your SAC marks. The VCAA keeps your school's rank order but moves the marks to match your school's exam results.
  • Your school's exam results set the scale. A top rank in a cohort that does well on the exam is worth more than a top rank in one that does not.
  • The exam carries a lot of weight. In most studies, external assessment makes up a large share of the study score, so trial exam results are a useful guide.
  • Be honest. Estimate a range, for example top 20% to top 30%, and look at both ends.

FAQ

How do I calculate my study score from SACs?

You cannot calculate it exactly: SAC scores are moderated against your school's exam results and then combined and ranked statewide. Estimate your likely place in the state instead, and use this calculator to convert it.

Which study score calculator is most accurate?

Any calculator that claims an exact study score from SAC percentages is guessing at moderation. Treat every study score estimate as a range of a few points.

What study score will I get if I am top 10%?

About 39 on the study score scale.

Is 40 a good study score?

Yes. A 40 is roughly the top 8% of a study, and in 2025 it scaled to between 38 (Business Management) and 51 (Specialist Mathematics) in the studies above.

What study score is average?

About 30. Study scores are designed so the middle of each study sits near 30 and most students fall between 23 and 37.

What does a study score of 35 scale to?

It depends on the study. In 2025 it became 48 in Specialist Mathematics, 41 in Methods, 39 in Chemistry, 34 in Psychology, 33 in English and 32 in Business Management.
